Hey there...

So I am thinking a lot about color, dyeing and knitting right now. I've thrown open the window and latting all the winds of creativity blown in.

As knitters who have knit quite a bit with my colors I would like to know a few things.

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.

2. What is your least favorite color?

3. What is your favorite color?

4.Do you like high contrasts  like purple and yellow?

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?

8. What plays into your color choices the most?

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based ona color you bought becuase you loved it.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?

If you could comment here or... you can email your answer to me. tina@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Response

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.

I have, but I usually gift them by showing the finished item; 1st person to say how much they like it, it becomes theirs.

2. What is your least favorite color?

Intensive pinks

3. What is your favorite color?

GREEN (on the more dirty end)

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?

Meh, sorta 'cause my home-team is the Ravens (I own Grayple)

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?

Yes, especially where there is blending/bleeding...

6. What do you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.

Self patterning, but I'm slowing acquiring some solids and tonals to use with them. I'm hoarding the speckles.

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?

Love them --- I want that Rusaulka in the old picture!

8. What plays into your color choices the most?

Will always default to greens as they catch my eye 1st. But I love the Shaded Solids that play with 2 colors to make one (Greige, Bladderwrack on the Rocks, Terra Cotta, Obsidian)

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based on color you bought because you loved it.

Color based on project.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?

I have 2 --- Greige, followed by Sabertooth Caterpillar

Colors

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.
Yes, all the time,, because most of the socks I knit are for others, not for me

2. What is your least favorite color?
Bright pink, purple

3. What is your favorite color?
Orange!

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?
Yes, but not as much as colors that have less separation.

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?
Yes!

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.
Totals, followed by solids and I love speckles! Not a big fan of self-patterning.

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?
If I get my hands on them, they’re great. If I see them and love them and can’t get them, not so happy.

8. What plays into your color choices the most?
I choose wild colors to pair with a neutral for colorwork, or I just pick colors that shout to me that I have to take them home.

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based ona color you bought becuase you loved it.
I get the yarn I love and then figure out what it’ll be.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?
Happy Anniversary, but I also love Pond Scum and Portland Plaid.

The answer is yes

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.

Sometimes - I fall in love with colors (and color names) and then the finished project ends up on a shelf or in a drawer.

2. What is your least favorite color?

Maybe browns, but then there are some browns...

3. What is your favorite color?

That's like asking me to pick a favorite child. Today's favorite is dark red. Tomorrow's could be teal or purple.

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?

It depends on my mood - sometimes, yes, sometimes not so much.

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?

I do love subtle shades, but a steady diet of anything might get boring

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.

Yes. :) It depends on the project, and the choice of project depends on the day.

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?

Fun!

8. What plays into your color choices the most?

Did I mention that my mood affects my preference? And sometimes it's a color name too.

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based ona color you bought becuase you loved it.

It's about evenly divided.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?

So many! There was a color a few years ago that I think was called the Skein With No Name, sort of rusty colors.

Another country heard from ...

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.
Didn't use to, but this is one of the reasons I adore the RSC!

2. What is your least favorite color?
Sorry to say, Tina, but I really don't care for Pond Scum.

3. What is your favorite color?
Blues. Then again, perhaps, um ... blue.

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?
It depends. Upon occasion, but not a steady diet of high contrasts.

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?
Yup, that's me. I like the subtle ones. Mostly.

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.
Love me the tonals.

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?
They can be fun, but I typically don't get bent out of shape if I don't get one (due to limited quantity or such).

8. What plays into your color choices the most?
If I'm knitting for myself, it's how the colors make me feel. If I'm knitting for others, it's their request or how the colors fits into my emotions in how I feel about them.

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based ona color you bought becuase you loved it.
Typically with things other than socks, I start with the project and then go & find the color. That said, I may a few sweater quantities of yarn in a "had to have color" with no specific project in mind ...

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?
This is a totally unfair question. Since I can't limit it to even three, you'll get a four-part answer: Maia, Loopty Loo, My Blue Heaven, Avalon.

Hugs!

Canada

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.
When I do that, it's because I'm knitting for someone else.

2. What is your least favorite color?
Purple, but it's my daughter-in-law's favourite; hence the answer to question #1. I'm also not a Pond Scum fan(apologies).

3. What is your favorite color?
2: Coral and teal.

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?
not usually

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?
yes

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.
I like tonals best and semi solids and some variegated(Portland Plaid).

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?
Interesting, but not essential.

8. What plays into your color choices the most?
For whom am I knitting? And, sadly, sometimes the colourway used to knit the pattern photos. It makes me feel very unoriginal.

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based on a color you bought because you loved it.
Both - about equally.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?
Coral, Marina, and the absolutely glorious Avalon.Oh, did I mention Thraven?

Cheers and white wine, Hazel.

1. Do you knit colors you

1. Do you knit colors you never wear just for the experience of knitting with them.
Not really. If there is something I just won't ever wear from the club, I will knit it and then gift to someone knit worthy.

2. What is your least favorite color?
browns - but I can be sucked in by a good brown

3. What is your favorite color?
I'm a pink and purple girl.

4.Do you like high contrasts like purple and yellow?
For me it's more about how close the purple and yellow are. Not sure of the right terminology, but there are purples and yellows that when you change them to grey scale they look like the same color. Those are the ones I like. It allows the pattern to come through but still have lots of color variation.

5. Do you prefer subtle shades?
I do tend towards the more subtle shades.

6. What ido you knit the most? Speckles, Self patterning, Solids, Tonals.
I'm really liking speckles right now, but I tend to go for the multi color yarns

7. How do you feel about one-of-a-kind non-repeatable colorways?
No strong feelings either way.

8. What plays into your color choices the most?
I look for colors that I connect w/ emotionally

9. Do you mostly choose color based on project or project based ona color you bought becuase you loved it.
Some of each. For a sweater I start w/ a pattern and then pick out a yarn. For socks I tend to start w/ the yarn and then pick out a pattern that will work with it. And there are definitely colors that I just love and have to have and know that I'll do something with them.

10 To date what has been your fav RSC colorway?
Happy go Lucky! Hands down one of the best colorways. I always smile when I see my socks in that colorway. The most wearable ones are blackbird, river rocked, and my blue heaven. If I had to pick, I'd rather have wearable colors. But then I'm also drawn to colors like comfort and joy that have a more emotional connection.

teal deer ahead

1. Typically when I knit with colors I don't normally wear it's either because:
a) it's going to be a gift (my mom and I have TOTALLY OPPOSITE tastes in colors), or
b) I love the color(s) but look awful in it and want something small and innocuous in that color to wear. (So I wind up with a LOT of sock yarn in wilder colors than I normally wear.)

2. Most pastels, but I'm really not a fan of soft aqua and mint, and have a personal vendetta against light, blushy peach or pink.

3. That shade of blue that's like a dark turquoise but which most people call "teal" but it's really too far on the blue side to be "teal". The body of a peacock color.
Followed closely by any rich emerald color.

4. It depends entirely on the project and my current whims. I've sort of drifted back towards wanting complicated stitch patterns, and those don't always coexist with bright, high-contrast varigaded yarns the way I'd like.

5. ...it depends entirely on the project and my current whims! I think part of what I liked about some of the more recent speckled and tipsy RSC options is that they have some pops of color, or are multicolored, but are still subtle enough to make a stitch pattern show up.

6. Across all types of projects, probably solids or semi-solids. I've got a lot of varigaded yarns I haven't knit with (I just buy and then pet, apparently), but I've been trying to challenge myself with speckled colors, which are kind of the best of both worlds. (But again, if you'd asked me ten years ago? I'd have eschewed colors like that. Probably with an unnecessarily cutting remark.)

7. Every time I go to a fiber festival that has somebody selling BMFA I usually wind up walking away with Mill Ends and Rare Gems, so I'm pretty confident saying I'm a fan.
(Conversely, I also get annoyed when a place offers too much "limited edition" stuff, but that's more a psychology thing.)

8. Oddly, novelty. Like, a color combination I haven't seen before, or at least not frequently. And often, certain colors will just leap out and grab me: recently, a coworker went to a satellite launch and brought me back a promotional poster and the color combo just about killed me (literally the same week you put up a fadient on the main blog that had all the same colors, so well played, shut up and take my money).

9. I typically will pick the project first (let's say 70% of the time), but I've been known to pick a color and ask questions later. (I also typically don't use the RSC colorway with its club-assigned pattern, but I've been around here long enough to have circled back to some of my first few years' worth of patterns.)

10. I can't pick one. I've got a soft spot for My Wild Irishgirlie, but I'd say the one that really took my breath away the second I opened the package was Starry, Starry Night. (I loved Spectrum of Chaos and Elementary Sorcery, too. Oddly, I wasn't a fan of Cherry Bomb--not my colors--until I saw it paired with Lean Mean Aubergine in a finished shawl.)
